Sharing and discussing ideas for innovative complete and sustainable streets are the heart of the San Mateo Sustainable Streets Plan. Our solutions target beautiful greenery to improve the environment and create public space that offers a distinctive and cohesive aesthetic. Not only will streets look beautiful, but they will become safer for pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, and drivers through innovative and contextual street design. Join the City of San Mateo, Nelson\Nygaard, Community Design + Architecture, and the Local Government Commission to learn more about these transformative solutions for sustainable transportation, and participate in the group activities focusing on enhancing El Camino Real.

Join your friends and neighbors to share your ideas and explore strategies to:

  • Improve conditions for walking, bicycling, catching the bus and getting around by car
  • Calm traffic
  • Add greenery for clean air and water
  • Enhance the look and feel of our streets and neighborhoods

This first community workshop marks the public kick-off for the City of San Mateo Sustainable Streets Plan. The gathering will provide an opportunity for residents and stakeholders to help shape the project goals and objectives, while learning from a team of experts about the principles and benefits of complete and sustainable streets. Participants will be asked to develop their visions and identify values for San Mateo and prioritize these items for consideration by the project team. A presentation by the project team will follow. Afterwards, people will gather around tables in small groups and mark up maps with their recommendations for improving access, safety, and mobility on streets in San Mateo. Street and urban design professionals will float between groups, answering questions, and carefully listening when citizens report back their findings and recommendations.

A professional planning and design team is working with the City to translate your input into solutions to improve safety and mobility for people of all ages and abilities in San Mateo.
